About Our Hunts
Butte Valley Ranch provides a unique combination of hunting for trophy resident Deer and Migrating Elk. The ranch has extensive wheat and alfalfa fields, year round stream and two spring fed ponds. It also has numerous small canyons that provide both excellent cover for the animals and good hunting opportunities. In the mornings and evenings it’s not unusual to see 25-30 deer in and around the fields. The number of hunters is very limited to ensure the trophy quality of the deer herd.
The elk migration usually is underway during the 2nd through the 4th hunts. One of the major migration routes for the Elk passes directly through the property and the adjacent PRIVATE ACCESS BLM land parcel. The Elk are part of the largest elk herd in Colorado (approximately 12,000) and allows the hunters a tremendous opportunity for a quality animal if the hunter exercises some patience and not harvests the first bull they see. The elk migration is TOTALLY dependent on the weather. Snow conditions on Thornburg Mountain and the White River National Forest determines when the elk migration occurs. It usually starts during the 2nd hunt and continues into December. However, it can start earlier or later depending on conditions. We will meet you at the ranch to discuss hunting techniques, opportunities and game patterns. We can also assist you in game field processing.
